Closet Dimensions Cheat Sheet: Reach-In, Walk-In, Island and Tower
Every number we size a closet with, on one page — depths, rod heights, walkways, tower widths and island clearances, with what each one decides.
The numbers that size almost every closet: 24 inches deep for hanging, 15 for shelves, rods at 40 and 82 inches (or 66 for long garments), 42 inches of walkway around an island, 84-inch towers with a 12-inch ceiling cabinet above, and a 60 x 24 x 42-inch island in rooms 12 feet or wider. At 42-inch walkways, 13.
Every one of these numbers appears somewhere on this site with its own reasoning. This page puts them in one table, because the questions they answer usually arrive together — the day you stand in the empty room with a tape measure.

Reach-in closets
A reach-in is used from outside, so depth is fixed by the hanger: 24 inches for hanging bays, 15 for everything else. Width is the opening you already have. The full set of reach-in numbers, with the door question, is on the reach-in closets page.
Walk-in closets
A walk-in adds circulation to the arithmetic: 42 inches of clear walkway wherever an island stands, 36 between facing runs, and 13 feet of room width before a 24-inch island earns its floor — 12 at the 36-inch minimum. The reasoning behind each clearance is in the walk-in closet layout guide.
Towers and islands
Towers run 84 inches high in five widths — 18, 21, 24, 30 and 36 inches — and two depths, 15 and 24. The island is 60 inches long, 24 deep and 42 high, with drawers on both long faces. Both component pages, linked below, carry the full size tables.
What these numbers do not decide
Finish, lighting and drawer count move the budget; they do not move the clearances. Get the numbers above onto a drawing first — the planner, linked below, does it in a few minutes — and the rest of the project is selection, not geometry.
